FNW Sits Down with Rolls Royce

Steve Rolls is coming soon to an arena near you.  That’s what he’s telling fans and if his past is any indication of his future then the sky is the limit for Rolls Royce.  Fight News Weekly's Tommy Herr got to sit down and talk to the boxer from Toronto when he was in at Syd Vanderpool’s club in Kitchener to spar with “Dangerous” Denton Daley for his upcoming fight.

Q:  Tell us a about your impressive amateur career.

A:  I have been boxing since I was 15 years old (now 28).  I had 97 amateur fights and won 2 Canadian National Championships.  I also finished 10th at the World championships in 2009.

Q:  After such a successful amateur career what are your goals in professional boxing?

A:  I have the skills to be a World Champion.  I want to fight and make money but it’s not about the money.  I want that World Championship Belt.  I train at the Grant Brothers Gym in North York and they surround me with what I need to get to the top.

Q:  You are 2-0 so far as a professional and you travelled out of province for both fights.  Talk a little bit about travelling to fight and where would you most like to fight in the future.

A:  It’s been tough finding opponents on the local scene because everyone knows about my amateur career.  Things are on the up and up now though with my new manager Todd Christie getting me fights.  As far as travelling to fight, I fought all over the world as an amateur so travelling doesn’t bother me at all.  I’d love to fight in Las Vegas and at MSG (Madison Square Garden) but I’d also really like to fight at home here in Ontario.  I want to build up a Canadian fan base.

Q:  What does Ontario as a province provide you as a boxer and what does it need to improve on in order to grow the sport of boxing?

A:  There is a good boxing scene in Ontario.  We can get a lot of different looks in sparring but I don’t think the talent is being exposed to the fullest.  Guys need to promote each other to really get the names out there.  We have the population and number of fight fans in the area but we need to continue to grow the sport through the community.

Q:  How would you describe your style as a boxer? What are your biggest strengths?

A:  I’m a boxer/puncher, who can fight in all areas.  It’s important to be adaptable to any situation.  I can box on the inside or wherever the fight goes.  I’d say my main strengths are my hand speed and my punching power.

Q:  Outside of boxing as your profession, what do you love about the sport?

A:  I love the Science of the sport.  It’s important to me to put on good exciting fights to entertain fans and bring in the bucks but I really enjoy the technical battles.  Guys like Pernell Whittaker and Bernard Hopkins that really show attention to detail in the ring.  It may not always make the most exciting fight but I love the technical side.

Q:  You mentioned earlier that you had the chance to go down to the Kronk gym in Detroit and train with the late Emanuel Steward, what an honour.  Do you have a story about him that sticks out in your mind?

A:  Yeah actually, back in April he paid for a hotel for me to go down and stay for a week and train.  He was a very giving guy who actually cared.  One night he took a group of us out for Sushi, there were a few of us Troy Ross, Adonis Stevenson, Andy Lee.  He told stories from the past about training Champions like Holyfield and Lewis.  Emanuel Steward wasn’t just a Legend for the World Champions he trained but also in character.

Q:  You are in town to spar with “Dangerous” Denton Daley for his upcoming December 1st fight at the Hershey Centre, talk a little bit about Denton and how you know him.

A:  I go way back to the amateur days with Denton.  He’s one of my best friends and he’s a great sparring partner.   He is very determined and has a ton of athletic ability and talent.  He’s such a student of the game too, I remember when he first started boxing at the Grant Brothers gym, I had already been boxing for a while so when we sparred I would get the better of him but he had so much talent and potential and he eventually caught up.

Q:  What does the immediate future hold for Steve Rolls?

A:  Right now I have a fight booked for December 8th in Montreal (Bell Centre) so I’m training for that.  I want to stay as active as possible, I’d like to fight every 4-6 weeks.

Q: Thank you for sitting down with me today, is there anything you would like to say to the fans and people who haven’t heard of Steve Rolls?

A:  Like I said to everyone after my last fight, “Steve Rolls is coming to a theatre near you.” My goal is to provide exciting fights for the fans.  I’m creating a fan base and I’m just getting started.

Steve Rolls is a talented and accomplished Canadian Boxer who not only has a passion to be great but to put Toronto, Ontario and Canada on the map.  Look out for Steve December 8th in Montreal at the Bell Centre when he takes on Ahmad Selemani in his third professional fight.

Fight News Weekly Sits Down With "Dangerous"

Fight News Weekly had the opportunity to sit down with “Dangerous” Denton Daley an undefeated Canadian boxer in the cruiserweight division to talk about his upcoming fight December 1st at the Hershey Centre and to get the word on what makes him so dangerous.

Q: You train and are managed by Syd “The Jewel” Vanderpool in Kitchener and you are promoted by United Promotions out of Mississauga. Tell me a little about those relationships and how they have shaped your career to this point.

A: Syd has been great, I couldn’t have found a better trainer than him. He understands boxing and how to work with athletes. He trains me based on my strengths and teaches me good habits that take advantage of my abilities. He’s a technician and he is very in tune with what’s going on in the ring. Don Macdonald is my promoter and he is a great guy. He is a workaholic and he does up a great show every time. We speak daily and he is always keeping you in the loop with what’s going on.

Q: You are fighting in the Main event on December 1st at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga Ontario and it won’t be your first time headlining a card at this venue. How has your experience in high profile fights prepared you for this one?

A: When you are in the main event you don’t want to disappoint. I show up in shape because it’s important to give the public and the people who support what they paid for. I’ve been in that position and I have felt the pressure before and take the responsibility seriously.

Q: Your opponent for this fight is Mauro Adrian Ordiales of Argentina. He’s fought 38 times all over the world. What do you know about him and what will fighting such a well-established veteran boxer add to your game going forward?

A: We know that he’s a hard puncher and that he’s not the best technically. That’s what we are looking to exploit, I’m more the technician. It’s motivating to know his strength, to avoid it and then exploit it. It’s motivating to know every punch counts in a fight like this because he hits hard and is an experienced fighter.

Q: Initially there was a tough time finding you an opponent after it was clear that you had surpassed the local competition. As a result you have the opportunity to take a bigger step up the boxing ladder. What are your near future goals, and where would you most like to travel for a fight?

A: I love to fight at Hershey Centre and I’m the main fighter for United Promotions, so whenever they have a card they want me on it. I’m working towards the NABF (North American Boxing Federation) Cruiserweight title which is highest title before a world title and I’m motivated for that. United Promotions are constantly working to seal the deal for me. I’d like to travel to Germany the most because the cruiserweight division is big there. All of the best cruiserweights and all of the belts are in Germany. Sauerland is the big promotion there and they pay the most to cruiserweights. Guys like Marco Huck, Steve Cunningham and Yoan Pablo Hernandez fight there.

Q: Aside from the fact that you are an undefeated professional boxer, what would you say makes you so dangerous?

A: The thing that makes me dangerous is my work ethic and will to win. When I have nothing left I will find it somewhere. I won’t accept the loss you really have to beat me down. You can have more skills than me but my will power is my advantage, the ability to impose myself on someone. That’s what makes me dangerous, I won’t stop. Q: Thank you very much for your time. Do you have a message for the fans and for people who may never think to come to watch a professional boxing event?

A: To the Fans, thanks for all the support it is genuinely appreciated. The fans show me love and support and I try to give it back through community service. I do guest and motivational speaking to support kids in trouble and steer them towards athletics and to stay in school. It’s important to give back to the fans that have shown so much support. Going to a boxing event live is totally different than watching it on T.V. If u haven’t seen one live before then you should definitely check it out. Come and support boxing and athletes earning titles in Canada. Everything is American based, but we have the product and entertainment here so support your local guys and those who can make a difference in the area.

Denton Daley is an exciting and talented athlete who is making a name for himself in the boxing world. December 1st at the Hershey Centre Mississauga promises to be an exciting event with an eight fight card for a full night of competition. Tickets and card information are available at www.UnitedPromotions.ca and through www.Ticketmaster.ca.

Return of the Gladiators

The Local boxing scene is alive and well in the Kitchener/Waterloo area. Fans filled Bingeman’s Marshall Hall Saturday night to be a part of “The Return of the Gladiators”, the first professional boxing card in the area in over 20 years.

Hosted by Kitchener boxing great Syd “the Jewel” Vanderpool, The event got off to a truly fitting start in the form of a 10 count to recently passed Boxing Legend, trainer and announcer Emanuel Steward. Vanderpool went down to Steward’s famous “Kronk” gym to round out his boxing game and trained with Steward for two years during his career. “He told me I needed to go out to the club and just relax and dance, not a lot of coaches would give that advice but it was what I needed.” Vanderpool said in a classy tribute to one of the best.

Julius “Caesar” Bunda headlined the four-fight card and thrilled the hometown fans with a devastating right uppercut that dropped his opponent Michel Tsalla in the third round. Tsalla battled valiantly getting to his feet only to have his corner throw in the towel wisely protecting their fighter. Bunda used his reach advantage and controlled much of the fight with his jab. Tsalla the Quebec fighter threw heavy hooks to the head and body that were able to temporarily move Bunda off balance but couldn’t connect to do any real damage. Julius Bunda improved his record to 5-2-2 and can finally boast of a fight and victory at home.

Julius Bunda getting his hand raised after a successful TKO win.

In one of the night’s two heavyweight bouts another KW boxer Artur Binkowski 16-3-3 took on Jonte Willis 9-4 of Tacoma Washington. Binkowski was making a comeback after a five-year layoff for the chance to fight in front of family and friends. The fight went back and forth in the early rounds with Binkowski looking to establish his Jab while “What you talkin’ bout” Willis worked his way inside. Into the middle rounds a little too much “showmanship” from Binkowski gave Willis the opening he needed landing a big left hook cleanly to the side of the head. Binkowski showed he was game in going the six round distance, but couldn’t put together enough offense to topple the tough Tacoma boxer who earned the unanimous decision victory.

The girls threw down in the “fight of the night” in a four round action-fest between Kara McLeod and Amanda Beaudin both from Ontario. From bell to bell these girls threw punches in a very well fought Super Flyweight bout. McLeod the southpaw looked to have the win in hand through two rounds but seemed to gas out allowing Beaudin to take over the momentum earning her the split decision victory. The finish of the fight brought the crowd to its feet in appreciation for both boxers effort level and will to win.

Adnan Shahkaram earned his first career victory over Donald Willis in a heavyweight bout that opened the evening. Both fighters gave it their all and maybe a little too early for Willis who couldn’t keep up the pace leading to the fourth round TKO stoppage.

The first of many boxing cards to come to the KW area, Return of the Gladiators put
www.kwboxing.com on the map as the source for pro boxing and showcased the tip of the iceberg in Ontario’s boxing talent. Syd Vanderpool runs his gym “Boxing by Syd” in Kitchener and is affiliated with the Ontario Boxing Association to promote and grow Professional and Amateur boxing in Ontario.

Quick Results:

Adnan Shahkaram defeats Donald Willis via 4th round TKO (ref stoppage).
Julius Bunda defeats Michel Tsalla via 3rd round TKO (towel).
Jonte Willis defeats Artur Binkowski via unanimous decision.
Amanda Beaudin defeats Kara McLeod via split decision.

Quillin vs N'Jikam: Crossroads

Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam is a 28 year old Cameroon born Middleweight with a 27-0 pro record with 17KO's. He had a 77-4-3 amateur record with wins over Notable opponents such as Andy Lee and Juan Ubaldo. He turned Pro in France in 2004 with a 3rd round TKO, On may12 2012 he won the WBO World Middleweight title although as a pro he has no notable opponents he is viewed as the toughest opponent Quillin has faced to date.

Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin is a 29 year old Cuban-American Middleweight Boxer with a pro record of 27-0 with 20KO"s a virtually identical record as N'Jikam's. Quillin's amateur career has consisted of only 8 amateur fights and he turned pro in NYC in 2005 with a 1st round TKO of Anthony Hunter and hasn't stopped winning since. His most notable wins are over Winky Wright (who had come out of retirement and was very rusty) and Antwun Nichols a former contender. Both of these men need this win to become a big enough name to get a possible Sergio Martinez or Chavez Jr type payday. Who will win? I pick Quillin by Decision, What do you think? Please comment, Thanks for reading.

The fight will be a part of easily one of the best cards held in New York in recent memory.

Main Card
Danny Garcia vs Erik Morales
Paul Malignaggi vs Pablo Cesar Cano
Devon Alexander vs Randall Bailey
Peter Quillin vs Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam
