No Mercy at the Hershey

Written by Tommy Herr

Ontario boxing fans got something to cheer about in an action filled night of fights at the Hershey Centre Saturday in Mississauga Ontario December 1st.  Headlined by undefeated Canadian Cruiserweight “Dangerous” @DentonDaley  the building was brought to its feet on a few occasions as the @UnitedPromotion stable of fighters put on a show.

Denton Daley took on 38 fight veteran Mauro Adrian Ordiales of Argentina (28-11) in the main event and things got “Dangerous” early.  Daley showed fans he was ready for the step up in competition and experience forcing the hard hitting Ordiales to take a knee twice in the first round.  Daley smelled blood in the water and finished the fight in the second round with a flashy overhand right knockout that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas and got the crowd out of their seats.  Improving to 8-0 with 5 finishes, Daley gave credit to strength and conditioning Coach Rob Cowie from Syd Vanderpool’s camp in Kitchener for getting him prepared for an explosive finish.  Daley has been doing resistance training and it showed with a highly exciting and athletic display of Pugilism.  Look for Denton to take another step up the boxing ladder after proving he can best a well-travelled journeyman boxer while headlining an event.

Dillon “Big Country” Carman of Belleville Ontario (5-1) took on Peter Erdos of Hungary (5-2-1) in fan friendly Heavyweight fight.  Erdos showed frustration early trying to handle the long accurate punches from Big Country, dropping his hands daring the Canadian to test his chin.  Big mistake from the visitor who was the recipient of some devastating snapping punches which lead to the third round tko victory.  Carman is a fan favourite and climbed up onto each corner to get fans going in celebration of his 5th career victory.

A last minute bout between Brandon Cook (7-0) and Junmar Emon (2-0) took place after both boxers scheduled opponents couldn’t compete for reasons unknown at this time.  Cook fighting at 154 pounds and Emon down at 147 had to agree to the bout the morning of the card and made the most of the opportunity putting on a “Fight of the Night” performance.  Cook controlled the first two rounds with his size and volume punching backing up the smaller Emon along the ropes.  The second half of the 4 round fight was what got the building rocking as the smaller man battled back landing a series of head snapping shots as Cook looked to tire under the high output pace he had set.  It was an almost exclusively inside fight with both fighters putting their own safety aside in exchange for an old school throw down.  The fight ended with the crowd completely charged up as the fighters awaited the decision.  Cook got the unanimous nod from all three judges and that’s when the building erupted into boos in support of the smaller underdog Junmar Emon who many felt battled valiantly enough to earn a draw.  The reality is that despite Emon fighting with heart, courage and landing some solid shots in the final two frames, Brandon Cook controlled the fight and pushed the action from bell to bell and would have been awarded an unfair draw on an unblemished record.

Steven Wilcox of Hamilton (5-0) took on Harrison McBain also from Hamilton (4-5-1) in a 6 round lightweight fight.  Mcbain tried his best to close the distance and get inside on Wilcox who utilized his movement and straight punches well to fend off his stouter more experienced opponent.  Wilcox showed good boxing skill in the unanimous decision victory to remain undefeated.

Natalie Brown of Mississauga Ontario (6-2) took on Tammie Johnson (4-4-2) of Lynnwood Washington in the opening bout of the night in a Light Welterweight match, 140 pounds.  It was a promoters dream as Brown used her superior boxing skill to find Johnsons chin early and often leading to the second round tko stoppage.

In all it was a successful night of fights at the Hershey Centre in United Promotions 10th boxing event at the venue.  Each of the matches offered something different for fans who seemed satisfied despite three fights being cancelled, out of which eventually became one truly exciting bout.  Keep an eye on United Promotions as they continue to build up professional boxing in Ontario with a great live show and a group of fighters all with bright futures in the sport.
